Racial Harassment
Love sees no color, that’s how I’m going to raise my child. We hear stories about hate crimes and racial harassment, but when you actually lived it, it hits way different.
It very disappointing to know my daughter, who is only a one year old has already been called a name. We do our very best to protect the ones we love, but it is unfortunate that we are not living in a perfect world.
Let me give you a little history about me. I’ve always lived in a city with a lot of minorities. I’ve never been a victim of hate crime or racial slur. The people I would run into at a grocery store or at school, we all respected each other. I grew up in Pittsburg, CA. We all got along with everyone. We never thought about race. In 2010, I started dating this guy I grew up with. When things got serious, he asked me to move in with him. He lived in San Francisco, another city filled with minorities. I loved it there and we lived there for 8 years. When we got pregnant, we decided it would be a good idea to move closer to my parents house so they can help with the baby. We moved to a city with less minorities.
At first, we didn’t think anything of it. We love the area, but we realized that some of the people in our apartment building weren’t very fond of us for some reason and we didn’t know why. One day, my husband was waiting for the elevator. Out of nowhere, a Caucasian man called my husband a piece of shit for no reason at all. Of course, this left my husband speechless. Knowing he was totally innocent, in our opinion this had to be about race.
Two weeks after the incident, my daughter and I went to a grocery store that has chargers for electric vehicles. While the car was charging, I got out of the car and fed my daughter her breakfast while she was seated in her car seat. While she was eating, we kept making funny faces to each other and basically we were just having a really fun time. This man drove up and parked right next to me. When he got out of the car, he looked at me and my daughter and called us a dick and an asshole for no apparent reason. I asked him if he was calling us that and he said yes. As he was walking away, he murmured under his breath “f*cking chinks. I was pissed. My plan was to wait for him and cuss him out, however I think he knew I was waiting for him because he took his sweet time at in the grocery store. I left and just went to work. However, as I was driving to work I started to cry. Even though nothing physical happened to me or my daughter, I felt violated. I cried because at one years old, my daughter was called a dick, an asshole, and a chink for no apparent reason.
Why? I just want to know why racism exists. It disappointing, it’s disgusting, and it’s ignorant.
If you’re one of those people who are racist, just ask yourself why? Then challenge yourself to get to know someone who you are being racist against. I guarantee you that you will learn how amazing the person is and hope you will learn to love all people no matter what their skin color may be.
People can change - BE. THE. CHANGE
